Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO)
| Power Electronics | Odyssey Semiconductor Technologies is developing gallium nitride (GaN) high-voltage power switching transistors with superior efficiency and characteristics over silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) devices. Odyssey Semi's novel and proprietary GaN processing technology allows for area-selective doped regions, enabling a vertically-conducting FET structure, analogous to the state-of-the-art geometries found in Si and SiC devices, but with the inherently superior material properties of GaN. GaN devices of an equivalent breakdown voltage and on-resistance can be made much smaller than both Si and SiC devices. Additionally, these smaller GaN devices will have a greatly increased switching speed, and this increased frequency allows for shrinking of the passive components at these higher frequencies. Smaller passive components lead to an overall smaller, lighter, and cheaper total system. Odyssey aims for these GaN power devices to replace the current Si and SiC devices while saving weight, volume, and cost. |

| Aerodynamics | Creative Worx has developed the Lumenar Aerodynamic Treatment to significantly improve the efficiency of large vehicles such as motorcoaches, buses, motorhomes, emergency vehicles & cab-over-engine (COE) trucks. This consists of specific vehicle body shapes & vertical airfoils mounted on the front & rear corners that reduce the drag force the powertrain must overcome to propel the vehicle down the road. For proof of concept, prototype Lumenar airfoils were installed on a motorhome which delivered a 13% improvement in fuel economy. Currently, Lumenar airfoils are being installed on the rear to deliver an expected 25% total fuel economy gain. These airfoil designs not only improve fuel economy, but stand to make remarkable improvements to electric vehicle range & generally serve as a technology enabler. Prototypes can be applied to vehicles involved with this FOA. Please contact Josh Leonard for more information.
Josh has worked in the transportation industry for 24 years developing designs for automotive & commercial vehicles, including the DOE's Super Truck program to maximize freight efficiency. |

| | Berkeley Lab's Transportation Group has expertise to support the batteries and electrification, energy efficient mobility systems, and technology integration Areas of Interest for this FOA. Please visit our websites to learn more about our advanced battery research (https://transportation.lbl.gov/batteries-and-fuel-cells and https://appliedenergyscience.lbl.gov/energy-storage), big data for mobility (https://transportation.lbl.gov/big-data-mobility), regional-scale mobility modeling framework called BEAM CORE (https://transportation.lbl.gov/beam).
The Behavior, Energy, Autonomy, and Mobility (BEAM) model is an open-source agent-based regional transportation model that overcomes the limitations of conventional transportation models to help regional transportation agencies make better planning decisions. An enhanced modeling framework called BEAM CORE can help regional and local planning organizations assess strategies before policies are rolled out or mobility technologies are adopted.
Big Data Mobility researchers develop the data science and computational frameworks needed to build next-generation transportation/mobility system models and operational analytics. Leveraging high-performance computing, sensor data, and big data analytics, they model urban-scale transportation networks and energy systems. They use real-world, near real-time data to optimize mobility, energy efficiency, and productivity.
The Battery technology team conducts innovative research to understand the basic science and overcome technological barriers to next-generation batteries. And Berkeley Lab’s Energy Storage Group devotes substantial effort to lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are promising for transportation applications, and the Group is developing batteries for electricity grid-scale applications such as flow batteries. |
