In the past 10-15 years, SWA’s focus on building energy has shifted more and more towards decarbonization and electrification. The focus on building enclosure performance remains – and has even increased with a growing number of projects achieving Passive House performance levels. With respect to mechanical systems, SWA engineers have become experts in VRF systems and heat pumps of many kinds. The goal in most of our projects is to provide space and water heating with minimal (or zero) use of on-site fossil fuels. Substantial challenges remain here, but technology is improving, our understanding of the technology is improving, and our clients are wanting to move in this direction. One technology example: we are currently involved in three separate projects with DOE, NREL, and PNNL to assess performance of heat pump water heaters in residential buildings. SWA is eager to continue supporting Labs in finding new ways to improve buildings across the country.

(2) Our social justice passion is advocating to increasing realistic opportunities for minority business (and individuals) interested in renewable energy projects. We possess former experience in recruiting minorities - and we would love to partner with DOE or a prime, in efforts to better this population's presence in the labor market, through recruiting and preparing them through training, internships, and apprenticeships.
So overall, we are in startup mode and are interested in funding for both of these initiatives.

The program encourages participants from all backgrounds and disciplines of study. Students will engage in a hands-on, applied learning experience where they investigate the potential roles of technology in their communities, their region, and across the nation.

Students will also explore common circular economy concepts - including remanufacturing, reuse, and recycling techniques used to transform material byproducts into higher-value resources.

The program and its curriculum are under final development. The course has been ran twice through the University of Evansville for college credit. It will be run in over 100 Indiana High Schools in 2025.
